Total Shoulder Replacement
During a total shoulder replacement at our Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, orthopedic office, our surgeon performs a joint replacement that consists of implanting a metal ball, stem, and plastic socket where the arthritic joint surfaces once were. These materials are placed in such a way as to recreate the natural anatomy of the shoulder, returning a patient to optimal or near-optimal function.
This procedure is ideal for bone-on-bone degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) and intact rotator cuff tendons.
Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
A reverse total shoulder replacement is the ideal surgery for patients who have suffered a tear in their rotator cuff and/or rotator cuff arthropathy.
The approach in reverse shoulder replacement is the opposite of traditional total shoulder replacement because the positions of the socket and metal ball are switched. This reversal is performed so that a patient’s deltoid muscle can be used to power their arm, as their rotator cuff is no longer suitable.
